Help BH Sister Yasmijn, help those in Nepal ....

Beta Eta sisters,

We reached out to BH Alumna, Yasmijn who has lived in Nepal with her family, and whose husbands family still lives in Nepal. She shares heart wrenching before/after images, and offers suggestions for how to help below.
Dear Sisters –
I hope this note finds you well.  As many of you know, my husband (Pawan) is from Nepal.  The devastating 7.8 Richter scale earthquake that hit Nepal this weekend has been very tragic. While luckily my husband’s immediate family (parents, brother’s family and sister’s family) are safe and sustained only property damage, many lives have perished, including a dear friend, who lost both his brothers and their families (total of 9, including five children).

We are heartbroken about our friends and family in Nepal who are scared and cold, sitting outside wondering if there will be another aftershock (50+ and counting), and fears of food and water shortages, and spread of epidemics are just starting.  The death toll is approaching 5,500 but is expected in be in multiples once all is accounted for, and damage to buildings and several UNESCO heritage sites has not even been estimated at this point.

Many have asked us about the choice of our charities – we have been working with SEBS – North America to raise funds. SEBS is Pawan’s high school alumni association – since it is a 501(c) (3) charity, your donations are tax-deductible.  We are using proceeds to (1) provide immediate medical relief (several ex-students are already volunteering on the ground and been indicating that supplies are finished), (2) food and shelter (as government / aid agencies are overwhelmed with volume of displaced people), and (3) “leftovers” if any will be used to educate orphaned children (in line with some of the other charity my school has been involved with).  Some of our personal friends are already on the ground and some plan to go soon to assist with the help.  Please note that 100% of the proceeds reaches victims (as this is all volunteer based and with no overhead; in fact, we are also offsetting credit card and Paypal charges via personal matching). http://www.sebsonline.org/misc/donate.aspx?c=NepalQuakeRelief

We are also involved with Ama Foundation, which is a grassroots US-based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing the most underprivileged children of Nepal with a loving home, education, and healthy live, and is expected to provide home and education to many children that will be orphaned because of this earthquake. I’m a board member and can tell you firsthand the wonderful work this organization does. http://www.ama-foundation.org/

We are hosting a benefit at our house this Friday at 8PM.  If anybody lives in  San Francisco/ Bay Area or know somebody that would like to come, please let me know and I’ll forward the information.

Please help spread the word!

Many thanks!
Yasmijn (Salim) Adhikari NM'97

#TBT #FSU National Championship Game 2013 - alumna perspecitve

Thanks to young alumna Danielle Sandoz-Osmus ('05) for this fun recap of her and her (now) finance's trip to the National Championship game and the celebration in Tallahassee!
Best Wishes Danielle on your nuptials!

Tailgating reunion at a home game (preparing for championship!) with besties BH alumnae: Carly ('06), Danielle, Christy ('06), Monique ('06) and Jenna ('07)
Jacksonville, FL to Charlotte, NC, Charlotte, NC to Los Angeles, CA.  That is the path my boyfriend, Adam Mason, and I took to travel to Pasadena, CA to see the undefeated 2013 Florida State Seminoles play the number two Auburn Tigers.  Adam and I made a mini vacation out of this trip, and got to meet many interesting Seminoles along the way.  We saw tons of garnet and gold as we traveled the Doak to Dena path.  From the man on our first flight who wore his full head-dress with two foot long feathers in first class the entire way to Los Angeles, to the numerous other fans in the airport wearing their Seminole gear as they boarded their planes to Pasadena, there was garnet and gold everywhere we turned.  An excitement seemed to fill the airport, from terminal to terminal, plane to plane.  Seminoles everywhere were getting ready to take over the city of Pasadena, California.

Adam and I were both so excited to travel to this game, as we had not missed a 2013 home game leading up to the national championship game, and had traveled to several away games as well (Clemson, Gainesville).  We are both die-hard FSU fans, and we both bleed garnet and gold.  Our passion for FSU goes so deep, it lies in our bone marrow.

When we got to Pasadena, we immediately put our FSU flags on our rental car and tried to share our pride with the city.  The city was filled with FSU fans, and unfortunately Auburn fans too.  When it was game time, we cheered the loudest we had ever cheered.  We screamed the loudest we had ever screamed.  Our blood pressure sky rocketed, and then it would settle.  Our veins were bursting, and then they would return to normal.  During the last two minutes of the game, Adam and I stood there, quiet as a mouse, watching and waiting for Fameis Jameis to do what he does best.  I cannot even begin to describe in words the joy and happiness that came over me when we beat the Tigers.  Singing “We Are The Champions” with thousands of other Seminole Fans brought tears to my eyes.  The game was such a memorable roller-coaster of an experience, and one that I will remember for a lifetime.

At the game - waiting for their big t.v. moment!

My boyfriend Adam and I traveled over from Jacksonville the morning of the celebration, flying our BCS National Champions flags  on our car the entire duration on I-10.  When we arrived in Tallahassee, there was a feeling of pure excitement in the air.

We visited the new Indoor Practice Facility (IPF).  What a great facility Jimbo has built.  And to think, Jimbo won a national championship the first year he had this facility built, now that is just remarkable.  We walked by the sod cemetery as well.  What a funny site to see, we had actual small coffins built for all of the sod we collected this year.  There the poor, poor little pieces of sod sat in the coffins.  The actual set of a funeral had been set up, fake sod, chairs and a tent sat outside the plots of the newly rested pieces of sod.

at the Doak for the celebration in Tallahassee!
The actual celebration ceremony was quite remarkable.  There were fireworks, the band, the cheerleaders, the new championship football team, President Barron and numerous other people that had come to celebrate with us.  It was later announced that over 20,000 Seminoles had come to the celebration.  Can you believe it?  That is a quarter of our stadium that can hold 82,300 people!  During the ceremony, highlights were played from the game, and this sent chills down Adam’s and my spine, as Adam and I were able to relive the moments we shared in Pasadena, right there in Doak Campbell Stadium.  They also showed a video of various other people around the country watching the game, and the same emotions during the game were felt by Seminoles everywhere.

After the celebration was over, we were allowed to go on the field and meet the players.  We definitely did not let this opportunity pass us up.  We did not get to meet Jameis, for he had to leave early for baseball practice, but we got to meet numerous other players and congratulate them on such a wonderful season.  I even took a selfie with Timmy Jernigan, who I got so close to for an autograph, but he got pulled away in another direction and I didn’t get to get his signature.  I cannot wait to do this all again next year!!  What an exciting time it is to be a Seminole!  The National Championship Celebration with the Seminoles was an experience I will certainly never forget.

#TBT Recruitment in the 1960's at @AXO_FSU

This fabulous photograph was shared by one of our chapter's most devoted and FUN alumnae:  Linda Sanford. Linda moved to California years ago, but loves visiting Tallahassee often for football and sisterhood. She stayed involved with alumnae chapters and advised at collegiate chapters (SDSU, Gamma Nu) in the San Diego area, and of course Xi Omega Xi!

Of this photo Linda wrote, "Thinking of [recruitment] reminds me of the “ice water teas” on the first 2 days.  We wore long white formals, long gloves, & red & green sashes in the 60’s.  That’s me in the photo."

Recruitment info for Alumnae...

a message from HQ..

Alpha Chi Omega alumnae:

As formal recruitment for fall 2013 approaches, here is a brief review of Alpha Chi Omega's legacy policy. We wish to provide you this information so that you are able to assist potential legacies as they enter into formal recruitment, as well as better understand the policies regarding legacies of Alpha Chi Omega.

Questions? Contact Jen Patterson, Associate Director-Recruitment, or Gina Fox, Assistant Director-Lifetime Engagement.

Our Policies

As outlined in the Polices of Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity, the legacy policy states:

R7 Legacy
A legacy to Alpha Chi Omega is a sister, daughter, granddaughter or great-granddaughter of a member. The Alpha Chi Omega member and her family member define their legacy relationship, i.e. step relations, blended families, etc. Alpha Chi Omega values the relationship between a legacy and an alumna member. Chapters are regularly educated regarding the national legacy policy. Additionally, alumnae members are encouraged to prepare legacies to meet the standards of membership set forth by the national organization and local chapter.

R7.1 Preferred Candidate for Membership
An undergraduate legacy who meets membership standards and eligibility requirements is considered a preferred candidate and:

[a] Is invited to the first invitational round of events during the formal recruitment process.
[b] Is invited to at least one recruitment event in an informal or continuous recruitment process.

R7.2 Placement on Final Bid List
A legacy who attends a formal recruitment preference event is placed on the first bid list by the collegiate chapter.

Membership Selection

While legacies are not guaranteed membership in an Alpha Chi Omega collegiate chapter, all collegiate chapters welcome the opportunity to meet Alpha Chi Omega legacies. It is our intent to educate both alumnae and collegians about the importance of inviting legacies to membership.

It is always difficult when a legacy gets released during recruitment, but as long as the chapter follows the national policy, the final decision of membership selection is the informed responsibility of the collegiate chapter. Recruitment can be a difficult and stressful process, particularly on large campuses—there are often as many legacies going through recruitment as the chapter will have spots in quota. While our legacy policies and our recruitment procedures are national level policies, membership selection is a chapter-level decision, which is truly made by the collegiate members at that time.

Long before it is time to submit any recommendations to a collegiate chapter, alumnae have the privilege and responsibility of helping to grow Alpha Chi Omega’s membership in the following ways:

Promoting Alpha Chi Omega as an active part of her life. Doing so will increase the name recognition and familiarity of Alpha Chi Omega to legacies and other potential new members prior to recruitment.
Increasing the strong reputation of Alpha Chi Omega by identifying and connecting with young women who would make valuable additions to our membership.
Educating legacies and other potential new members regarding Alpha Chi Omega’s standards and values, as well as privileges of membership.

Legacy Webinar

For more information on legacies going through formal recruitment, please join Jen Patterson, Associate Director-Recruitment, and Gina Fox, Assistant Director-Lifetime Engagement, on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 9:00 p.m. (EST) for the legacy webinar. This webinar will provide alumnae with information regarding legacies participating in the formal recruitment process. We will review Alpha Chi Omega policies, give attendees a deeper understanding of the recruitment process, and help prepare members who may have legacies going through recruitment this year or in the future. Register here for this webinar.

Membership Recommendation

When the time comes, it is the responsibility of alumnae to utilize the Membership Recommendation Form to make the chapter aware that a legacy or other potential member will be participating in recruitment. All alumnae are encouraged to complete this form for any relative or friend who will be participating in recruitment. To send a recommendation (the preferred way to notify a chapter of a legacy or friend), you will need to register and log into alphachiomega.org. Then, simply click on "Recommend a Member" located on the homepage. This will take you to the Membership Recommendation Form and recruitment directory, which contains the recruitment contact information for all collegiate chapters.

Please be aware that Alpha Chi Omega has updated the Membership Recommendation Form for 2013. Be sure to use the updated form when writing recommendations for potential new members.  If you are writing one for Beta Eta chapter of Alpha Chi Omega.. be sure to mail to 518 West park Avenue Tallahassee FL 32301 Attention CRIC

We encourage you to share this message with other Alpha Chi Omega alumnae whose email addresses may not be in our database.
