Spring Break Mission Trips!

Over Spring Break, two of our sisters went on mission trips. Jenn Coates travelled to Grenada, where she worked with a school called PAM (program for adolescent mothers). Hannah Emerson went to Riobamba, Ecuador on a MEDlife trip.

Jenn says, “girls get kicked out of school in Grenada for being pregnant so here they are able to get a ‘second chance.’ It has a day care for them to bring their children and it gives them an education as well as teach them parenting skills. When we got there, we taught about teen dating violence, so like healthy relationships, boundaries, etc. We also taught about character development, so like future goals that they had, obstacles they had to go through, and better ways of communication.”

Hannah says, “we had 3 days of clinic, which included treating patients of all ages as well as teaching the children how to brush their teeth. We had one project day where we built concrete stairs that lead and down a mountain for a community. It is incredible that in a country only a short plane ride away, everything is different. My favorite part of the trip was witnessing the impact that simple healthcare made for the different people and communities. This trip reminded me of what a privilege it is to have access to things that many of us take for granted such as running water, food and healthcare. It was amazing seeing that such a minor thing such as a toothbrush or a sticker could make a child's day.”

CCYS Sleep Out 2015

On December 3, Senior Katie Desorcy served as a Sleep Out Leader for Capital City Youth Services (CCYS) in Tallahassee, FL. The CCYS is an emergency crisis center for the homeless and runaway youth in Tallahassee. The Sleep Out was a fundraiser that included about 40 people from all ages in the city that raised money for the homeless youth. The night also was to raise awareness for the homelessness in the area.

Katie says that next year she wants to be even more involved and make the event bigger. Because most people aren’t aware of how many children and students are homeless in our community, she hopes to get others to participate in this once in a life time experience. “It was a learning experience like no other, and everyone should do it because it really teaches you to emphasize with others and put yourself in their shoes.”

Katie is also a senior graduating in the Spring. Throughout her time in Alpha Chi Omega, she has served as the Facility Operations Assistant and was on the New Member Committee. She is also very involved in Alpha Chi’s intramural sports, especially with being Captain of the flag football team.

Sister of the Week

This weeks Sister of the Week is Junior, Jenn Coats for being admitted into Tallahassee's Guardian ad Litem program! 

In October Jenn will begin training to become one of the many powerful voices advocating on behalf abused and neglected children in the state of Florida. Jenn will be protecting the interest of children as they go through court proceedings in the Second Judicial Circuit. While specific duties may vary from child to child, she will be participating in all stages of each case and will make recommendations to the court according to each child's unique circumstance.  

Jenn is beyond excited to start this journey and can't see what wonderful experiences it will bring. Congratulations, Jenn. You will undoubtedly change many children's lives for the better.
